Mixing Sports and The Arts

Let me introduce myself a little better, since I don't have a bio up at the time I am posting this. Here's the basics: My name is Luke, I am a junior Communication: Public Relations major from Munster, Indiana.

I guess you can say that I am involved in a lot of different aspects of Dordt. Many people see me as a unique person because I am in theatre as well as sports. I did it in high school and I continued doing it in college. I have acted in two main stage plays, sung in choir, and have been on the Men's Volleyball team for the past two years (I had to quite because of scheduling issues), I also help out with the Tennis Club.

However, it isn't that uncommon to be involved in many different things at Dordt. I know quite a few people who do it. But how is that possible? Who is involved in sports and the arts? Why does anyone do that!? Well, all I can say is that no matter how different you might think they are, they actually are quite similar.

In both theatre and sports you gain strong friends, that you call your family. In both you have specific traditions and rituals. In both you practice for hours until your body aches and then give a performance of a life time. In both you rely on other people to cheer and encourage you to do your best. In both you have a leader the directs what your next play. In both you create some of the best memories that will stay with you for the entirety of your life.

I can go on and on, but I think you guys get the point. Being involved in both sports and the arts have given me experiences that I will cherish forever. Dordt gave me the opportunity to be the well-rounded person that I strive to be, and I thank God everyday because of it.

That's all for now.
