Today, I woke up blessed.
I may not have realized it in the moment. However, as I sit here with a little free time to breathe, I reflect on just how blessed I really am.
I woke up breathing with my heart beating.
The sad reality is that some people didn’t. And so, because of that, I don’t take this for granted. I’ve been blessed with another day in which opportunity presents itself again and again. I don’t want to waste what I’ve been given and I certainly don’t want to forget that it’s a blessing.
I woke up with shelter and in a bed.
Not only did I wake up with shelter, but I woke up in a nice dorm room with a working fan. I also have a couch and a desk to do homework on. While some people in this life find themselves without somewhere nice to sleep, I’ve been blessed with a comfortable living area.
I woke up on campus of a college with one of the best engineering programs for its size.
This truly is a blessing. Not many people get to pursue this opportunity at a such quality institution. I am so thankful for professors and advisers that truly care about my academic success. They are always willing to help, and the small class sizes make it much easier to receive attention when help is needed. Not only that, but they approach their discipline with a strong Christian perspective.
I woke up part of my secondary family: Dordt Football.
I have 100+ brothers whom I trust and care about. It’s truly an amazing feeling to be a part of this team. I have a special appreciation for this opportunity because I understand how rare it is to play at the next level. For example, I am the only one from my senior class of about 20 guys that is playing college football. Not only are my brothers an amazing blessing in my life, but I have tremendous coaches who speak life and push the team and I to be the best we can possible be.
I woke up part of a strong culture of faith.
The culture of faith on Dordt’s campus is so wonderful. I love how many opportunities there are to corporately worship with other students of like-minded faith. These opportunities are in my top five favorite things at Dordt. We're also blessed by a tremendous campus ministries staff that brings passion and the love of Christ to this amazing community.
The truth is that this list could go on and on. From waking up in the freedom of the US to having great friends, I cannot fully comprehend just how blessed I am. Rather, I want to do my very best to appreciate the blessings as I encounter them. Along with that, I also want to make sure that I give all credit where credit is due. This all comes from God. He is the source of all good things, and for that, I am so appreciative.
Thank you for today and the blessings of today, God.
