Pumpkin Spice Latte’s: What every girl thinks of 24/7 and adores when fall is approaching and what every guy gets extremely sick of as he scrolls through his social media and sees pictures of one every other post. To be honest, I’m probably more like the girl than I am the annoyed guy. Pumpkin Spice Latte’s, also referred to as PSL’s by all the cool kids, are good. I cannot deny that. So, in an attempt to combine two of my favorite things, one of those being Pumpkin Spice Latte’s (PSL’s) and the other being Dordt College, I’m going to present to you my very fall-ish and basic acronym to describe my favorite things about Dordt.
For the second year in a row, Dordt was ranked #1 in student engagement by the Wall Street Journal. You want to know what contributes to that recognition and makes it possible? The people! People who make up the choirs, orchestras, and bands. People who spend countless hours putting together theatre productions. People who are a part of the praise teams. People who work extremely hard on their athletic teams to be successful and present a positive image of Dordt to all of the teams they play. People who dedicate their time to being a TA for classes and labs. People who went to several years of school so that they could come and teach at Dordt. People who have work-study’s which help the college stay clean and run smoothly. And guess what, all of these ‘people’ do not stay in these categories. They mix, they are friends with people outside of their activities, and people do more than one of these things. In fact, I bet the majority of the campus is involved in more than one activity! These people engage with each other and form relationships that help Dordt to be inviting and unique!
Dordt’s opportunities for spiritual growth and encouragement are plentiful. Monday night worship is raw and powerful, Thursday night Praise and Worship is a beautiful example of community and rest. Chapel on Wednesday is inviting and eye-opening, GIFT on Sunday nights is a time for renewal before the week ahead and growing in faith together, and LIFE is a time of learning and new experiences. Beyond these times, there are discipleship groups, wing bible studies, team bible studies, prayer rooms, and faculty and staff who are always willing to chat. The spiritual atmosphere is intentional; it does not stop seeking ways to develop and deepen a student’s relationship with Christ. I am thankful and will forever be thankful for the countless ways Dordt has helped me grow.
College is really about classes and learning, right? Maybe not totally, but it is technically what we are paying for. I love Dordt’s learning environment. The professors are challenging and incredibly personal. I believe the curriculum helps prepare students for careers but beyond that, helps prepare 22-year-olds to graduate, enter the real world and be a light for Christ shining in the darkness. There is also a place for everybody in academics at Dordt. Majors range from Agriculture to Engineering, to Art, to English, to Nursing, to Biology, to Pro-Tech, to Theology, to Education, to Business, and much more! Faculty and staff are here for you at Dordt. They are here to support you and help you graduate with the fullest and best education they can give you!
Fall is great because it is filled with Pumpkin Spice Lattes and students learning, engaging, and growing at Dordt.
